SWEET TEA TRIO

‘Songs for Son of the South’

Wednesday September 8, 2022

@ Nashville Palace in Nashville, TN

Tennessee is nicknamed Volunteer State for good reason, but there’s no place across the great state that upholds that moniker better than its capital city of Nashville.

Whether it’s a catastrophic event that happens several states away where trucks drive miles filled with donated water and food and a slew of volunteers to help rebuild, a local organization coming together to benefit the unhoused community, or just simply when a very well-respected, well-liked individual goes through a life changing event and needs a little push from his closest friends to help get through the aftermath of it, Nashville always rises to the occasion.

The latter was the case with an all-star concert at the legendary Nashville Palace when the ultra-talented friends of Josh Carney (known in the hunting community as “Son of the South”) came together to raise funds to aid him with his continued healing & recovery after having major surgery that resulted in 36 staples in his back.

Known for his infectious smile, positive attitude, and spot-on imitation of a Canadian Goose, Josh Carney sat at the table center stage laughing, singing along with his friends, and even heading out to the dance floor a time or two - wheelchair and all!

Top-notch talent bookended the entire evening on each of the two songwriter rounds that included performances from Jessie Wilson, Kennedy Scott, Joybeth Taylor, Jay Knowles Clint Daniels, and more! But the clear musical moment of the show came from the Sweet Tea Trio (Kate Falcon, Victoria Camp, and Charity Bowden), who wowed the crowd with their stellar performance, but absolutely made sure they kept the focused star shining brightly on Josh, highlighting him and what his positivity and friendship has meant to them personally.

“There are stars in the southern sky, southward as you go,” radiated across the venue and softened the table talking to a silence that was so quiet you could hear a pin drop as everyone’s attention was immediately directed at the stage as the Sweet Tea Trio allowed their incredible harmonies to captivate the crowd during their acapella opening on “Seven Bridges Road,” before sliding it into “Tulsa Time,” the Don Williams classic which perfectly fits the vibe of the Palace and had everyone in the crowd toe-tapping along with them.

“This next song is a representation of Josh’s love life,” the ladies in the Trio joked as they dug back to their 2017 self-titled EP with “Needle in a Haystack,” bopping along with the groove on stage and effectively getting the audience to do the same as Josh and his friend headed straight to the dance floor down front and whirled around with smiles plastered across their faces.

“We dedicate this song to the women who we love the most….our mama’s,” the trio then shared as they asked if anyone out in the crowd were mama’s and dedicated it to them as well as they played “Love, Mama,” a song they released earlier this year for Mother’s Day that began with another captivating moment as they slowed the pace and allowed the vocals to shine first, before giving way to a tambourine infused boot heel clicker.

“So, all of us gals up here on stage have been dating Alabama boys our whole lives; good ol’ country boys,” told Kate Falcon. “But we come up here to Nashville and start talking to these guys who are all just pretending to be country,” she said with a slow nod of her head and a crooked, sarcastic smile on her face. “We’re like, well first off you can’t even call a turkey,” she shared as she proceeded to show the audience her own turkey calling skills. “And second…we can buy our own drinks,” she finished as the trio performed their catchy new single, “All Hat, No Cattle,” perfectly calling out the pretenders over a dance along with rhythm that refreshing recalled the 90’s era of country music.

“When we wrote this last one that we’re gonna play, we said we wanted to write a song for our friends where they could pull up a beach chair and pop a cold one out the cooler while listening to it,” Falcon finished as the band pulled us into the ultra-catchy, summery vibed “SPF50” to close out their 30-minute set.

While the music was certainly top-notch from the first notes played to the last, throughout all the fun that everyone was having, the focus was never lost that at the center of this night was the “Son of the South” Josh Carney. His full-of-life personality was hard to not vicariously live through as you watched him beaming with grateful excitement that infectiously affected you the moment you walked in as he truly is the living embodiment of the age-old saying “A stranger is just someone you haven’t met yet!”
