Texas country music is a breed all its own. The artists aren’t afraid to take risks, the charts aren’t afraid to give them chances, and the traditional brand of up-tempo, honky-tonk music is still the king when it comes to radio play and bringing the dancehalls to life on a Friday night.

That’s where Hayden Haddock comes into play.

His last single “Wind It Down” was very well received by Texas radio, and he now returns with “Better Than Your Memory” – the second release from his forthcoming EP.

The song, written by Trent Willmon, Jim Beavers, and Brice Long, is a surefire honky-tonk smash that is driven by its tempo and will absolutely get you jumping off your barstool to hit the dance hall floor and get your boot heels clicking.

Lyrically, Haddock first sings of trying to drink away an ex in the opening verse of the song:

I came here tonight to drink about you

Trying to drown a memory or two

In this old cow town bar

As I’m putting my empty 3rd one down.”

Before he then flips the script when that very ex comes strutting into the bar, looking as he sings in the chorus “better than your memory.”

After seeing her walk in, the second verse then plays out like a confessional as Haddock sings of her memory haunting him and always letting him know that he made a big mistake, while leading him to reveal the cold hard truth that he’d want one more shot with her if she’ll let him have one.

By never really saying why they broke up, this lyric becomes very relatable as it allows the listener to insert their own story into it. Couple that connectibility factor with a melody that will keep you dancing, and Hayden Haddock has just delivered his second song in a row that has made his forthcoming EP become even more anticipated.

I also suspect that “Better Than Your Memory” will hit the Texas charts quickly and climb them with a bullet.
