Whenever we get the chance to explore music from other countries, it’s always exciting to hear the different elements that they bring into their craft that help put it on its own unique shelf, while still cleverly managing to maintain just enough modern touches from the current sounds of the states that makes it attractive to our market.

Australia’s Lily Grace, and her debut US single “The Two of Us Meet,” perfectly fit that bill.

Tackling the familiar idea of the classic love story with a Romeo & Juliet type perspective, Lily Grace gives us a song that’s built around vulnerability, unsureness, and an emotional roller coaster that she skillfully wraps into a modern, singer songwriting vibe which allows all the proper amounts of room for her vocals to stand in the spotlight.

Displaying her vulnerability in the first line of the song, and again later in the opening verse when she confesses that her overthinking is playing tricks on her, she then reveals how intrigued she is by the new guy in town, although admitting that he is still a mystery to her with a background that no one truly knows -“No one knows your story, no one knows your truth.”

This overthinking and vulnerable theme continues in the second verse as well, as Lily Grace anxiously sings of her uneasiness when she sees him with another girl, before reminding herself that it could mean nothing at all.

However, what really impresses me about this second verse is when Lily Grace shows off her strong songwriting know-how by moving time forward through one single line that uses the idea of the leaves falling (signaling fall/autumn), and then pushing it into the comparative of her falling for him.

Another attribute that showcases her strong songwriting abilities is that while the crush remains a complete mystery to her, they’ve also clearly run into each other several times as she sings in the chorus of him taking her hand and how her heart skips a beat every time. By writing this lyric in such a way, and with it coming from the female perspective, there’s something in it that says it’s the mystery crush who’s playing hard to get. That provides an interesting twist to what we usually get from a lyric of this type!

With some success already in her home country of Australia, sixteen-year-old Lily Grace has now set her sights on US radio. Whether or not this gets picked up for major rotation remains to be seen, but regardless, Lily Grace’s songwriting and emotional delivery of these lyrics are going to turn heads and get people talking as she takes her first big step on this new road.
