Jake Hoot will always be first recognized as the Season 17 winner of the The Voice. But that recognition also comes with an entirely different set of circumstances when it comes to choosing his songs going forward because they must uphold his powerful voice, while also delivering something that can make an impact on listeners so that they will see who he is as an artist in the here and now.

For a perfect example, look no further than his newest release “Wherever Time Goes.”

Co-written by Hoot with Houston Philips and Michael Farren, the song features his wife Brittney as his duet partner, and it’s just a simple fact that whenever a husband and wife come together on a love song, you get an honest chemistry that won’t be found in many of the other duets.

The softness of the instrumentation throughout the opening verse immediately allows for Jake’s very powerful voice to be spotlighted as he sings us through an emotionally packed reminder that the hands of time never stop moving, but how you choose to spend your time on earth becomes the plot for the story you write.

When the chorus punches home we get our first taste of how perfectly Brittney’s vocals harmonize with Jake’s as they sing straight to one another that no matter where life takes them, they want their time here to be spent together.

The second verse sees a perspective change as Brittney commands the leads to further reiterate the sentiment made in the chorus when she sings,

We could sit here for hours

And watch the paint dry

Or end up on the beach

And watch the sunrise

Oh, it don’t really matter

As long as I’m right here with you.”

It’s in the bridge, though, that Jake and Brittney bring their voices together to deliver the line of the song when they hit us with the thought-provoking statement, “I’m gonna live like every single second here is my last.”

Arriving just ahead of their one-year anniversary, “Wherever Time Goes” is obviously an ultra-personal song for Jake and Brittney. However, when you can tap into that real-life emotion and bring it into a song the way that they have here, you show your vulnerable human side to the audience while connecting your personal story with their own.
