CARRIE UNDERWOOD
"Ghost Story"
Capitol Records Nashville
Country music megastar Carrie Underwood released her brand-new single, “Ghost Story”, to outlets and streaming services everywhere last week. The song, following her My Gift Christmas album, represents her first country-centric project since 2018’s Cry Pretty record and the first radio single since 2020’s “Drinking Alone”.
“Ghost Story” offers a unique twist on revenge following a breakup. The tune tells the tale of the aftermath of a failed relationship, inducing moments and scenes that her ex-lover will continue to see and feel her long after she’s gone.
Written by David Garcia, Josh Kear, and Hillary Lindsey, the song features Underwood living her best life but still wanting her ex to realize how much he missed her and how the failure of the relationship was his wrongdoing, something that should continue to haunt him.
“You’ll be sitting at home drinking about me
When I’m out with my friends at the bar
But there ain’t enough whiskey for you not to miss me
I’ll be waiting at the bottom of the bottle in the dark”
As is the case with most Underwood singles, “Ghost Story” showcases the singer’s phenomenal vocal delivery and range, which are unprecedented and un-matched at this point in country music.
Similarly, which is also commonplace for the Capital Records Nashville recording artist, the tune tip-toes on the line between country and pop, but at this point, does anyone even notice or care about that any more?
Obviously, Carrie is no stranger to breakup / revenge songs. But this is a different twist on the topic than the likes of prior hits from years back, “Before He Cheats” and “Two Black Cadillacs”. This reflects an ominous, haunting, mood and vibe, something to which we can all relate following a bad breakup.
The originality of the lyrics, delivered by Underwood’s incredible vocals will undoubtedly make this another one of the songstress’s more popular releases and will certainly leave fans anticipating more music soon.
Carrie recently took home the award for Single of The Year with Jason Aldean for their hit “If I Didn’t Love You” at the 2022 ACM Awards. She is currently amid her “Reflection” Las Vegas residency, which began in December.
