A Thousand Horses took the entire country music world by surprise last month when they unveiled the country-rocker “Broken Heartland,” re-emerging on the scene with their newest single and first release from their own label, Highway Sounds.

The song, however, was merely a teaser for a much bigger project as we’ve now found out with the group’s recent announcement of a brand-new album of the same name dropping on August 26, 2022.

To celebrate this monumental announcement, the band now gives us a second taste of what to expect from the album with their new song, “Another Mile.”

Co-written by the groups Bill Satcher and Graham DeLoach with Jacob Powell, the song takes all the southern rock kissed signatures that we’ve come to know and love from A Thousand Horses, cranks them up a notch, and leans into a moody organ through the opening of the song before thrusting into an assault of guitar licks that push us into the heartland rock anthem that sings of relying on a long, therapeutic drive with the radio up to help get over a heartbreak.

Lamenting that everyone in their small town has probably already heard about their breakup, lead singer Michael Hobby then tells us through each of the verses how he doesn’t need the typical remedy of drinking her away underneath neon lights, that he doesn’t want to see their old friends and talk about her, and he isn’t trying to run from her memory, but is rather just looking for a moment to clear his head.

For that specific moment, he turns to a back road drive through the country that’s full of as many miles as it will take to get her gone, as he sings through the chorus:

I'm gonna need another mile, 'nother song on the radio

Driving too fast with the wind, let me let you go

Find a back road remedy with no speed limit

And forget you for a little while

Gonna need another mile.”

The vocals are crisp, both the leads and the incredible harmonies, while the lyrics are straight to the point and encompass many of the emotions that us listeners face ourselves when we’re trying to move on from a heartbreak, immediately injecting the song with an ultra-relatable aspect.

Most importantly, though, A Thousand Horses has shown us in just two songs – “Broken Heartland” and “Another Mile” – that without any constraints holding them back, they’re taking some additional risks to go outside the box within’ their signature sound and it’s clearly paying off in big ways as they are creating an incredible amount of buzz for this new batch of music that’s very similar to that which we saw when they first broke out with “Smoke.”
