As CCB Nashville continues delivering a new song from their talented artist roster every Friday in 2022 as part of their #newmusicfriday initiative, RT Johnson has used his first seven releases of the year to show us a few different sides of his arsenal.

He’s taken a turn at a modern, pop country infused sound on “Trouble,” given us a fresh take on a 90’s country inspired love song with “She’s My Kind of One of a Kind,” and stayed the course with the classic country tradition of telling stories about real life, real people, and real values on songs such as “American Tough,” “Daylight Southern Time,” and “You Can’t Go Wrong.”

At the core of his song releases is always his naturally honest good ol’ boy country charm and a believability factor in his voice as he sings about the small-town, southern morals that he himself holds true to his heart.

With a choppy guitar riff that digs into a swampier grit then we’ve heard from him previously, RT Johnson delivers his latest single, “Pistol Packin’ Preacher.”

The instrumentation and overall vibe throughout the style of the song walk perfectly along the dirty, old western feel of the lyrics as Johnson wraps his distinguishable vocal into classic country storytelling, offering a description that immediately allows you to visualize the preacher…

Straight out of a western scene

A cowboy hat and old blue jeans

… while using an amazingly well-written line to explain the preacher’s attitude as being that of “John Wayne meets Billy Graham.”

In true Southern Baptist form, Johnson further describes the preacher as the type who spews fire and brimstone from the pulpit with a Smith & Wesson in his back pocket while making the demons scream the minute that he steps into the sanctuary.

However, the lyrical depth of the song arrives when he strikes the listener with the all-too truthful, thought-provoking line in the bridge, “It’s a shame it has to be this way, but that’s the world we live in today.”

With classic country storytelling that holds strongly to morals and values, wrapping into Johnson’s southern charmed vocals, the mud hole stomping rhythm gives the emerging artist a song that will ignite the dance halls and honky-tonks while getting boot heels clicking on the hardwood.
