Who says the boys get to have all of the fun?  “Huntin’ Season”, the latest release from standout twenty-two-year-old singer-songwriter Mackenzie Carpenter, is a playful take on one of the more anticipated times of the year.

While the long-standing stereotype remains that men across the country count down the days until it’s open hunting season, leaving their significant others at home all day while they parade through the woods with their buddies, there is another perspective to this phenomenon.

When the boys are away, the ladies will play?  Maybe not always, but Carpenter teases and sasses her way through three minutes of witty lyrics alongside an irresistibly catchy melody.

When I kiss him goodbye and I wish him good luck

Say, “Don’t you come back without a twelve-point buck”

‘Cause that’s the reason

For my newfound freedom

Naw, you ain’t the only one been waitin’ all year

Oh, deer, I do love huntin’ season

The ability to add her modern flair to a traditional subject is what puts this song over the top.  The thrumming electric guitar and immediate vocal edge hooks the listener immediately, and the country-music classic strategy of storytelling keeps us all interested throughout the entire track.

“Huntin’ Season” is one of those songs that is funny, clever, and makes you appreciate when an artist is able to showcase his/her personality through a few minutes of musical delivery.

Carpenter has been making a name for herself as a songwriter, with her first cut, “Villain” recorded by Lily Rose, landing at the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Country chart.  She has been working in the studio this year on her full-length debut project, and is on the road this fall with Jake Owen and Travis Denning.
