With a 2022 CCMA nomination in the category of Country Music Program or Special of the Year for her “Wise Women – The Show,” and the Billboard charting success of “Married,” Mallory Johnson has continued to ride that momentum buzz straight into the recent announcement of her debut full length album Surprise Party (dropping on October 28, 2022).

With an announcement of that magnitude, she also teased the album with the release of the tongue and cheek, keeping up with the joneses feel and irresistible groove of “Goin’ Broke.”

She’s now surprised her fans with another teaser of the album ahead of its release with “Not Your Heart.”

Written by Johnson with Callie McCullough and Kalsey Kulyk, the softer pace of the song leans into simple instrumentation that allows Mallory to tilt into a vulnerability that unravels yet another strong layer of what makes her one of Canada’s most buzzworthy artists.

If I’m honest…when you called me late last night

I was hoping for a moment you finally got it right

Those two lines that open the song set the incredibly honest lyric in motion as she bares her soul, nearly crying out through the heart tugging lyrics of getting put in the friendzone by the one who she’s falling for. More so, though, Johnson perfectly embodies the affects that feeling used takes on someone as we move into the chorus:

“You keep playing with my feelings

Say you love me, but you don’t mean it

The way I want you to

And I’m tired of being used

For a phone call when you’re lonely

Picking up just kills me slowly

I put you back together

While I fall apart

Cause I’m your shoulder not your heart

Being the one that he leans on most, to the point that she knows all his deepest secrets, keeps her unrealistic hopes up only for it to kill her every time that he says, “we’re just friends.”

Songs like this shoot straight into the heart of the listener. If they themselves have experienced this feeling, then they know the hurt all too well. But if they haven’t experienced it, Johnson grabs the full emotion with her vocal know-how and puts you in her shoes as you can literally feel the pain of heartbreaking disappointment through your speakers.
