While “Rock On” may have been the song that helped Tucker Beathard initially break through to the mainstream, his past few releases have seen him redefining himself as he boldly stands tall in his beliefs and shows an extreme willingness to tackle the toughest, current topical subjects head on; All while challenging us to be better!

Whereas “Prayin’ For You” spoke of being kinder to others and showing more empathy, his latest release, “One of Those,” stands toe to toe with us while looking us square in the eye as he challenges us to really think about who we are, what we believe in, and why we’re maybe not embracing it.

Co-written by Beathard with Ben Stennis and Jeff Hyde, the simple strum of the guitar mashes wonderfully into the lo-fi production of the song as just enough fuzz interferes and adds an underground element to it that Beathard’s raw, honest vocal perfectly fits into as he draws a line in the sand.

“Are you one of them sitting in the boat trying not to rock it?” he asks on the opening line as he continues to antagonize the ones (“the them’s”) who keep their beliefs silent, before punching into the chorus and flipping from asking if you’re one of them, to if you’re one of those…listing the type of revolutionary definers while throwing down his challenge to figure out who you are.

“Or are you one of those don’t back down for nothin’

One of those standing up strong for something

Walking the walk even if you gotta walk it alone

One of those tough enough not to cave in

One of those ain’t too proud to pray when

Shit hits the fan and the rubber hits the road

You better know before then

If you’re gonna be one of them

Or one of those”

However, it’s the second verse that takes this song to its strongest level when Beathard shows us exactly  where he’s coming from with his challenging of you, by facing his own mirror as he reveals:

“Too many times I’ve been one of them looking back regretting

Who didn’t do what I knew I should’ve done at the time

But mama used to say boy you’re better off overstepping

Then winding up one of them fenced in when they draw the line.”

Anyone can see that the world is certainly on its edge right now, and Beathard unashamedly provokes us to get bold and stand up for what we believe in before it’s too late, rattling our cages with a sense of urgency to his poignant lyrics.
