DRAKE WHITE
"Pound Cake"
Independent Release
Indirectly released just in time for the holidays, “Pound Cake” is the latest offering from Drake White, so it’s set to build momentum at the end of the year while preparing for a busy music scheduled in 2023.
Premiered on December 8 on UK radio on The Country Show with Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2, “Pound Cake” is a fun, light-hearted tune that serves as easy-listening for Drake’s following as well as general country fans alike.
Written by White along with Ben Chapman and produced by Jonathan Singleton, the song uses a baking metaphor to stress the importance of taking a break from every-day life to do something fun with the one you love. It’s a perfect reminder and lesson to be learned, especially during the holidays when so many of us are taking some time away from work and obligations to unwind and enjoy time with those that are most significant to us.
Drake’s soulful vibe and groovy delivery are on full display here, and the chilled, laid-back lyrics bring easy listening to a whole new level.
“Gimme some of that pound cake
So thick and sweet
Some of that pound cake
Bring a man to his knees
There ain’t much more that I can take
Gimme some of that pound cake”
The tune was penned during “Wednesday Night Therapy”, White’s weekly social media series, which features the singer and friends performing live from his barn. Interacting with fans virtually was the primary motivation behind the series’ inception, and it has introduced fans to both White’s personal side as well as his musical interests and inspirations.
“Pound Cake” serves as the most recent release since ‘The Optimystic’, which was released in March 2022. The record offered his unique musical twists are on a culmination of country, soul and southern rock influences, and has been renowned as one of the year’s best collections by media outlets and industry professionals alike. As a busy and successful 2022 wrapping up, we can all hopefully look forward to more music and appearances by Drake White in 2023.
