Canadian born singer-songwriter Royale Lynn, who calls Nashville home today, is certainly not a stranger to the Music City scene. Her pen as a writer has earned her renowned cuts with Spencer Crandall (“K[no]w Better”) and Leah Marie Mason (“Far Boy”), while as an artist she’s been walking a little more on the line as she’s carved out her unique path by walking just outside the common norm to define who she is.

Her more recent artist singles “Workin’ on My Country” and “If We All Drove Trucks,” both certainly fit into the current fare of country music, but underneath their insatiable mainstream sound sits an undeniable alternative rock kissed edge that held right on the brink of being a little too much, but right at the ready to push Royale Lynn into the edgy territory she fits most comfortably.

Enter her brand-new single, “Runs in the Water.”

The song, co-penned by Royale Lynn, Elysse Yulo, Nell Maynard, and Autumn Buysee, sees her fully embracing her alternative rock influences to go all in on a vibe that she describes as “Punktry.”

Lyrically, this absolutely checks off a lot of the country thematic boxes as she explores the middle of nowhere, small-town where she grew up, describing it as having one road in and one road out, a creek running through it, and as a blue-collar type of town that spends their Friday nights under the lights of their alma mater.

However, as much as the lyrics are inspired by her country influences, the brooding melody that continually builds momentum before slapping into the shred of the riff laden guitars and tilting into grunge rock territory through the chorus, provides a headbanging wall of sound rather than the typical, sway along with flare of modern country as it clearly takes its production cue from the house that alternative built.

Down the middle of this sonic blast of sound, though, Royale Lynn provides one of her strongest vocal outings to date as she comfortably fits her voice within the bigger sound by carrying all the right amounts of fury so that she never pushes out of range. By doing this, she gives the song a really slick feel that borrows as much influence from today’s envelope pushing country acts as it does the clean rock sound of artists such as Avril Lavigne and Nickelback; both whom she states as influences.

While veering off into left of the mainstream dial territory to offer something vastly different than the norm isn’t always something that is received with open arms by the country music community, the fact is that Royale Lynn has stepped into her own with this high-octane track and has given her fans a surefire song to rock along with as they crank their windows down this summer and pump their fists along with the melodic beat.
