Over the past year and a half, Molly Lovette has really focused on redefining her signature pop-country sound as she’s continued to evolve as a songwriter and performer; an impressive growth spurt which can be heard between “Hey Hey” and her most recent single, “Birthday Hangover.”

She now kicks off 2023 with her brand-new single “Better Than You,” and she peels back yet another layer of what she’s bringing to the table as she opens her next chapter.

The song, co-written by Molly with Matt Frederickson and Riah Butler, wraps a soft bounce through the sultry, country rhythm of the intro to initially entice the listener, before Lovette drips her insatiable, southern drawled vocals into the “I’m better off without you” lyric.

With an extreme amount of confidence, and a whole lot of sass driven attitude, Lovette sets the tone when she sings us through lines of liberated emotions, addressing the fact that she isn’t allowing him to break her heart anymore like he had done so many times in the past.

With very clever writing on lines such as, “You’re just a scratch on the back of a record I’m playin’ no more,” and an attractive amount of “don’t give a dang” attitude, she assuredly showcases that she knows exactly who she is when she delivers the punches, “You can try to talk you up, but you can’t bring me down” and “I’m feeling more like myself than I did with you.”

By expertly injecting these emotions into her vocal, when Lovette then slaps the chorus, the listener is already well into the vibe and feeling the freedom of the lyrics, making them want to scream along with her as she sings:

“Can’t get no lower than I was with you

Coming out on top, breaking through

When I move on, I move fast

Good and gone, not coming back

When you see me out with someone new

Just know I’m doing a whole lot better than you!”

Shredding guitars through the bridge give the instrumentation a very big feel, while the start and stop pop through the opening lines of the final chorus give the listener that perfect sing along moment that they’ve been clamoring for.

The buzz surrounding Molly Lovette continues to get louder with each new release, and a big part of why comes through the fact that she is never one to sit squarely in her comfort zone, but rather constantly challenges herself to stretch the boundaries of her sound to stay fresh and exciting. This is exactly what she’s done again on “Better Than You.”
