When it comes to discussing the hubs of where country music lives and breathes, Texas is certainly a market that always finds its way into every conversation. The renowned scene across the Lonestar State features artists who write what they know, sing what they live, and create a major support base by pounding the pavement with memorable shows.

Mikayla Lane created a strong amount of buzz in the Texas market in 2022 with a spot as a Top 10 finalist for the Texas Country Music Awards Songwriter Contest, but she also dipped into the waters of the Nashville music scene when her single “Ambush” landed on several Nashville tilted playlists, including CMT’s “The Round Up.”Lane now returns with her latest single, “Rodeo Money,” and she continues to walk that fine line between Texas themes and Nashville flare.

Co-written by Mikayla and Bridgette Tatum, the incredible acoustic strum of the guitar perfectly laces the sentiment of the heartbroken lyric which juxtaposes the lonely feelings that come when you fall second best to a cowboy’s love for the rodeo.

With a uniqueness to the melody and rhythmic feel of the song, the listeners ears immediately perk up as this is something a little different stylistically than the current Top 40 norm, but underneath that insatiable vibe sits Mikayla’s emotionally charged vocal which tenderly upholds the feel of the lyrics and tugs you straight into her painful realizations.

In full admittance, Lane sings us through lines that tell us she absolutely knows that cowboys aren’t ever in a relationship for the long haul:

“Dusty cowboy’s and rodeo money, don’t hang around long and they don’t stay for nothing”

“They burn the rest in gasoline, white lines and miles onto Abilene, chasing that adrenaline dream.”

But she truly elevates the heartbroken punch when she faces her own mirror and transparently admits that she’s to blame for allowing herself to continue to fall for these types, confessing that she knows she’d probably be in love by now if she chased a different kind, that she can’t rope them or hold them for very long, and that she’s even aware they don’t really love her.

This complete transparency is what takes this vibey song to a level of major connectibility with so many who find themselves falling for the wrong type of guy repeatedly. Though the cowboy and rodeo theme of the song will easily lend itself to more success in the Texas market for Lane, the unique touches in the structure combining with her amazing vocal prowess should be more than enough to capture the attention of some in Nashville as she continues forging that path as well.
