With rock edge grit and pop country sensibilities on the very well received “Damage Control,” Taylor Austin Dye put a strong exclamation point on the path that she boldly carved out throughout 2022, which started out with hot releases, “Like You Do” and “Lucky Man.”

But if 2022 is claimed as a good year for Dye, then 2023 is already looking to be a breakthrough for her if the immediate accolades for “Rest In Peace” are any indication. Upon its release, the song landed in the #1 position on several renowned charts and earned placement in the iconic Billboard Magazine, quickly elevating her status to amazing new heights out the gate of the new year.

She called me up at a quarter past three, big sister he hit me,” Dye tells in the chorus, placing an emphasis on the severity of domestic violence, as the rainy styled moodiness of the instrumentation perfectly encompasses the darkness of the justifiably murderous revenge lyric.

With a balance in her voice that combines frustration, anger, and a sly knowingness, Dye skips past the planning stages of how to get even that so many songs of this nature generally format to intriguingly place us at his funeral as she uses the verses to set the tone of who her sister’s abuser really was.

“Dry eyes, it’s no surprise; he was living on borrowed time!”

“His mama’s still crying, and the preacher keeps on lying

No, he was not a man of God cause he been caught too many times

He was a thief and a cheat, a natural born deceiver.”

However, as everyone else is wondering who did it, Dye breaks the third wall so-to-speak to give an unapologetic wink to the listener as she metaphorically holds a finger to her lips as if to say “shhh.”

“I waited long enough until he was black out drunk

Cinder block on the pedal, threw him in his truck

Ashes to ashes dust to dust

Who did it, who done did it, never gonna find out it was me!

Who did it, who done did it, take it to the grave baby rest in peace!”

Whenever a songwriter/artist pulls from their real-life situations, as Taylor Austin Dye has done here, you get stark honesty wrapped within every aspect of their song to offer a Polaroid snapshot of the specific situation.

Taylor Austin Dye not only holds tightly onto “Rest In Peace” as she rapidly surges ahead on her career path, but she also boldly sheds a truth on the importance of reporting domestic violence, making this song carry an even larger, and more important impact.
