CHELSEY JAMES
"Must've Been Drunk"
Independent Release
For many people, looking in the mirror to discover who you are and to then make the necessary changes to get to where you want to go is something that is often fought tooth and nail by most – But not by Chelsey James. Her personal eureka moment came with the recording of her brand-new song “Must’ve Been Drunk.”
Though the song itself is about walking away from a relationship that became nothing more than a waste of time, James herself has also said that it “has given me the strength to walk away from the artist everyone told me to be and start being the artist I know I am.”
The song, a collaboration with producer/songwriter Cole Phillips, uses very clever wording in the lyrics that plays perfectly off the title of the song to describe the relationships final demise and why she’s walking away from it: “you’re like a bad hangover,” “I don’t give a shot, sick of living on the rocks,” “this time you can kiss my glass,” etc.
She continues to reference drinking terminology when she rolls into the chorus and begins to speak about the personality of her other half and why they can no longer be together: “You’re as cold as a Coors Light can when the mountains are blue,” “You’re the furthest thing from sweet red wine,” “Only miss me when that whiskey first touches your lips,” etc.
All these comparative lines, though, are designed in such a perfect way that the punch of the hook hits us just right when James sings, “Must’ve been drunk when I fell in love with you.”
We’ve all experienced this feeling in our past relationships; that feeling when we aren’t mad, upset, or angry anymore, but we’re just done and over it. Chelsey James captures that emotion perfectly by balancing her outstanding vocal delivery against a moody melody that encompasses the vibe of that overall feeling.
