Whenever you think about country music mecca’s, the natural places that come to mind are Nashville and Texas. However, you absolutely cannot discount what’s happening due North of the US. The current Canadian country music scene is tremendously influenced by what’s coming out of Nashville right now and it’s also giving Music City some of their best exports who we’re proud to embrace as our own.

One such talented songwriter/artist is Melissa Livingstone.

The western Canadian raised songstress has a resume that’s already chalk full of several accolades, but a well-timed move to Nashville became the first step to opening her next exciting chapter.

As Samee Cannon’s latest single “Salt & Sugar” - which features Page Mackenzie and Melissa - continues to surge and make impact, Livingstone is simultaneously captivating listeners with her newest solo effort, “Grew Up On It.”

Having already amassed nearly 74K Spotify streams since its release, Livingstone’s tremendous growth spurt is heard loud and clear as the song has taken the 90’s branded country that we heard from her in 2022 on “Country Enough” and “Small Town Thing,” and added just the right modern kissed ingredients to deliver a perfect blending of who she is and where she comes from in one 3-minute package.

The extremely catchy tempo slaps you into the rhythm and immediately gets your hips popping as Livingstone gives a knowing nod to the small-town upraising she “grew up on,” leaning confidently on her expertise to autobiographically tell us through each of the verses that she knows all about bench seat slidin’, a moonlight kiss, the local bars where cute girls drink for free and guys talk fast cars, farming, fishing, back porch picking, and living off the land.

However, while each of the verses lists the different things that she knows all about, she then boldly backs all of it up when she strides into the chorus and instantly has you singing along with her as she leans into a sass-induced drive that outlines her small-town credentials:

“I grew up on it

Boots in the dirt

Daddy said this girl’s gotta learn how to work

Keep your pay honest, know what you’re worth

If you’re gonna shoot whiskey better chase it with church

Up the radio, up like flowers grow

If you wanna know what’s up

Take it from me, I’m a backroad’s prophet

If you want the truth, I grew up on it.”

Melissa Livingstone delivers more than just a song with “Grew Up On It,” she offers a small-town anthem that’s neatly wrapped into an ultra-upbeat melody that tickles the country heart while effectively getting your boot heels slapping the hardwood floors at a Friday night dancehall.
