GREYLAN JAMES
"Undermine"
Big Machine Records
With cuts by Kenny Chensey, Cole Swindell, Chris Young, Chris Janson, and Brantley Gilbert already to his credit, Greylan James has solidified himself as one of the strongest emerging songwriting talents in the current Nashville music community.
However, as his song “2 Years Back” continues to earn rotation at radio as a “Highway Find” on SiriusXM, it couples together with the recent announcement of him signing a deal with Big Machine Label Group as he segues from behind-the-scenes songwriter to an artist on the rise.
The first taste of what’s still to come from this uber promising talent arrives now with “Undermine.”
The modern country infused vibe of the intro immediately grabs your attention and perks your ears with its radio ready feel, as it then drops into a pop laden backbeat allowing James to slide his clean vocal over the top of it to keep you swaying along as he sings praises to the one who’s captured his heart.
Taking us directly into the bar and placing us in the middle of a conversation between him and her as they’re smiling and laughing while reliving their first kiss moments, James paints the early picture of their budding relationship when he remembers, “wouldn’t kiss me that night under your porch light….then you finally kissed me under mine.”
However, this song really takes its meaning and shape when he hits the chorus and reassuringly tells her that she’s the only one for him, arriving at the incredibly heartwarming hook “of all the girls under the sun, baby you’re the only one under mine.”
He continues painting the reassuring picture in the second verse when he shares how much he loves it when they go downtown and she slips her ID into his billfold right “under mine,” before he stands in complete awe that she’s chosen him when someone as amazing as her could be with anyone she wants to be with:
“You could sleep in any shirt that you want to
Tangle up any sheets but you wake up under mine
Can’t believe you wake up under mine”
Greylan James is no stranger to the modern country music fan, but when you smash that rising star status into a song that is clearly built to pull an “aww” moment from the listening couples as it resonates the story weaved within this lyric with that of their own story, then you have the song that is going to launch his artist career to even greater heights right out the gate.
