The Red Dirt music scene is a wide-open field that welcomes a variety of sounds and styles to it. Though to maintain a status amongst it, an artist must be bringing something to the table that will instantly hook the listener and connect with them. That’s exactly what emerging artist Hunter Thomas has done with his newest single “Go For A Drive.”

Signed by Thirty Tigers, who are set to be releasing his self-titled debut album next year (2022), Thomas gives us an incredible melody from the get-go that pushes up against stellar guitar work that teeters its country vibe against a rock tilt, while skillfully splicing in touches of classic country instrumentation to give this a uniquely vibed feel.

But for me personally, it’s what Thomas does with the lyrics that hooks me most. Plain and simple, this is a song about going for a drive to free your mind when life is throwing you its inevitable challenges.

He paints perfect pictures with several of the lines throughout the song, which are so vivid they pop right out of your radio speakers and instantly have you reminiscing about your own nights that you’ve spent just driving around to clear your head:

“You go for a drive in the middle of the night.”

“The windows rolled down.”

“Just one more time through the heart of this town.”

However, this lyric also doesn’t ignore that fact that music is the true game changer to making you start to feel better on these types of drives. Thomas sings in the chorus of an old favorite song coming on the radio that hits you like an old memory and suddenly, it changes everything.

Hunter Thomas utilizes a steady build in the music to drive to the chorus so that it allows him to punch everything home, but he never allows the instruments to overshadow the high-quality lyrics and incredible tones wrapped into his voice to deliver them.

To stand out in a vast music scene like the ones in Texas and Oklahoma is certainly no easy task, but if you’re looking for a blueprint as to how it’s done then look no further than what Hunter Thomas has done with “Go For A Drive.”
