LUKE COMBS - Where The Wild Things Are - River House Artists/Columbia Nashville
Country music superstar Luke Combs released his fourth studio album, ‘Gettin’ Old’, in March 2023. And among the many high-quality, well-written tunes on the collection was “Where The Wild Things Are”, which instantly became a fan favorite.
Seven months later, in response to his fans’ responses, Combs has released the song as the album’s third single. As we’ve seen over the years, Luke can seemingly do no wrong when it comes to releasing new music. With an impressive streak building of consecutive No. 1 singles on charts and at radio, what is perhaps even more impressive is his ability and willingness to push boundaries and take risks, and “Where The Wild Things Are” is no exception.
Written by Randy Montana and Dave Turnbull, this is a tune unlike any other Combs has released to the masses. We’ve seen him enjoy renowned and well-deserved success with drinking songs, love ballads, and anthems, and now we are being treated to an outlaw story. This is a classic western inspirited by 1950s America, complete with all of the elements of a traditional tale from years past. With its mid-tempo arrangement and waning, crooning vibe, the music provides the perfect backdrop for the tune’s focus…it’s lyrical anecdotes. Lyrically, it’s a story that will keep the listener’s attention throughout, and Combs’ vocals, as usual, are up to the challenge of delivering the necessary emotional impact appropriate for the subject material.
“Oh, it’s the hearts on fire and crazy dreams
Oh, the nights ignite like gasoline
And light up those streets that never sleep when the sky goes dark
Out where the wild things are”
“Where The Wild Things Are” follows two chart-topping singles off ‘Gettin’ Old’ – “Fast Car” and “Love You Anyway”. The former, originally written and released by singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman in 1988, was incredibly re-imagined and invited fans from a new generation to appreciate the quality of the tune with its stratospheric climb to the top of the charts for Combs. “Love You Anyway” was the disc’s lead single, released in February and hit No. 1 on September 9. With both tunes hitting the top spot, Combs set a new record for the shortest timespan between number one singles by a lead artist (four weeks).
Having sold out stadiums during his incredibly popular 2023 tour, he is set to hit the road once again in 2024 beginning in April through the spring and summer across the country. The GROWIN’ UP AND GETTIN’ OLD TOUR will be featuring the likes of Cody Jinks, The Avett Brothers, Jordan Davis, and Mitchell Tenpenny, among others, throughout the year.
