ERIN ENDERLIN
"Somebody's Shot of Whiskey"
Black Crow Productions
With songwriting credits under her belt that include Alan Jackson’s “Monday Morning Church” and Lee Ann Womack’s “Last Call,” Erin Enderlin has made a strong mark on the country music industry as a songwriter.
However, it wasn’t until I first heard “Ain’t It Just Like A Cowboy” that she peaked my ears as an artist. Since then, Enderlin has continued to impress with each subsequent release: “I Can Be Your Whiskey,” “Broken,” and “Tonight, I Don’t Give a Damn” – just to name a few.
Her classic country style, which rests against incredible, depth-filled lyrics, has always felt like it’s ripped straight out of a 1970’s honky-tonk, and with her latest single “Somebody’s Shot of Whiskey,” she delivers on this mark again; albeit with something a little more up-tempo than we’ve heard on her releases in the past.
With prominent use of fiddle pushed up against a toe-tapping rhythm, Enderlin pulls you through an incredible lyric that is all about embracing who you are, which ultimately leads to the hook of the song, “I’d rather be somebody’s shot of whiskey, then everyone’s cup of tea.”
Descriptive lines (like these that I’ve listed below) help Enderlin to unapologetically describe who she is throughout the song:
“Just a honky-tonk angel with a little bit of hell to pay.”
“I stand behind the words I said.”
“You can’t make everybody happy and that’s alright with me.”
While Enderlin has mentioned that the song captures the way she’s feeling these days in that she just wants to make the old-school country music that she loves, this stone country song is poised to become an anthem for self-acceptance and learning to live your life exactly as you are with compromising yourself.
