Mark Taylor introduced himself to the country music world with his debut single “Buzzed On A Boat” a few months ago, and he immediately put all of us on notice of things still to come from him.

Things still to come has now arrived with his next single “I’m Down.”

The song, written by Taylor, leans against an addictive guitar lick the minute you hit play to first pull you in before delivering an irresistible, tempo driven melody that you can’t help but bop along with.

Lyrically, there is a lot to love about this song. This is about talking to your ex on the phone, letting go of all the things that caused the breakup, remembering the good times instead, and getting fun and flirty again, and who knows, maybe even coming back together because as Mark Taylor says in the hook, “I’m down!”

He brings us into the middle of their conversation through flirtatious, though transparently honest, lines such as:

“It’s been a long time since I felt your hand in mine.”

“Let me buy you a drink, you’ll have time to think about what went right or wrong.”

“I know we put it on hold months ago, but I never stopped loving you.”

“Let’s put it back together so I could hold you tight all night.”

There is a namecheck of Thomas Rhett in the chorus when Taylor sings, “I got Thomas Rhett on the radio,” and a mention during the first verse of sitting in a dorm room writing this song, which are both very clever ways of connecting the song with the demographic he’s aiming for, while also allowing us of the older generation to reminisce back on our own college days of chasing after the one that got away.

Toss the break down that opens the final chorus into the mix, which perfectly lends itself to an audience participation moment at a live show, and you have an ultra-catchy song that is built for the radio charts.

“Buzzed On A Boat” was a great first introduction to Mark Taylor, but a song like that can easily get lost in the summer shuffle of country songs. However, “I’m Down” has just put Mark Taylor on the map in a BIG BIG way.
