BRANTLEY GILBERT FT. ASHLEY COOKE- Over When We're Sober - The Valory Music Co.

With the rebel rousing anthem “Off The Rails,” the namesake of his current tour, multi-Platinum selling artist Brantley Gilbert delivered the familiarity of edgy grit and chunky guitar strikes that we’ve grown accustomed to with his signature sound as he offered the initial look at his seventh studio album.

He now teams with ACM New Female Artist of the Year Ashley Cooke on his latest release, “Over When We’re Sober.”

Written by Gilbert, Jason DeFord (Jelly Roll), Brock Berryhill and Justin Wilson, the song examines the conflicting toxicity of a relationship gone sideways, failing within the balancing act of trying to let go of what was while continually falling back into one another when the whiskey takes hold.

Gilbert softens the natural rasp built into his voice to capture heart-strained emotions as he paints the morning after, goodbye again picture while surrounded in the lingering scent of her perfume and the makeup stains that she left on his pillowcase, holding the heartbroken emptiness in his vocal bends and tilts as he and Ashley then marry their voices to punch the chorus as the emotional turmoil boils over:

“It's only over when we're sober (Sober)

We don't believe it when we say goodbye (Goodbye)

We always say we want some closure (Closurе)

But last night was just another last time, rewind

To I hatе you and you hate me

'Til the three shots of that whiskey

Turns into I miss you but you miss me

They say it's over when you're sober

But they don't know us

It's only over when we're sober”

Adding the female perspective to the losing at love situation, Cooke battles similar internal feelings while ashamedly witnessing the scene that’s playing out around her as she recognizes how their staying stuck on one another is a complete contrast to how all their friends have had it with them and are moving on.

With the promise of several high-profile collaborations on this next album, including this one, Brantley Gilbert has hyped the buzz while continuing to deliver the right pieces of the overall puzzle out the gate. Where “Off The Rails” was an all-out country rocker, “Over When We’re Sober” sees him masterfully shifting tone to blend with the softness of Cooke, offering a spotlit focus with a 1-2 strike that encapsulates both sides of who he is as an artist with a snapshot of the feels that this next album could hold.
