TERRY LEE BOLTON
"Every Bit As Good As You"
MRC Records Nashville
Terry Lee Bolton is no stranger to any country music fan.
The Detroit native, who is dripping with rock-n-roll influences, came to Nashville years ago and has smashed those together with an edgy, country kissed sound to create something that he can uniquely call his own, which we’ve heard in the past on many of his singles such as “Down The Highway,” Big Ol Train,” or “Hold Me Down.”
On one of his newest songs, “Every Bit As Good As You,” Bolton changes gears and pleasantly surprises fans with a sound that showcases his tremendous growth as a songwriter and artist while tapping into uncharted territory for him.
The song abandons the shredding type of guitar licks we’ve grown accustomed to from Bolton, and instead, leans against the simple strum of the guitar and a softer drum beat that pushes together with the airy sound of synth to deliver a piece that nearly feels like it dropped out of the Woodstock era of the late 1960’s.
Lyrically, Bolton sings us through an indecisive relationship issue where the couple is standing at the crossroads of whether to move on from each other or wondering if they should stay together. He sings on the opening verse:
“You Can Cast Me Out
You Can Push Me Away
You Can Put Me Down
Or You Can Ask Me To Stay"
The decisively throwback feel of this song is a refreshing turn from Bolton that really allows the listener (and his strong fanbase) to see another side of who he is. The risk he takes by somewhat changing direction, though, is exactly why this song will continue to stamp down Bolton’s name on the music industry as he opens this next chapter.
