SAM HUNT
"23"
MCA Nashville
As “Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90’s” continues to be a mainstay on Top 40 country radio, Sam Hunt is now introducing us to what comes next with the release of his brand-new single “23,” the first release since his 2020 album Southside.
The song, written by Sam Hunt, Chris La Corte, Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne, wraps around a pop backbeat that blends together all the right modern country touches while borrowing clear influences from the 1980’s Top 40, but also sees Hunt leaning more into an acoustic atmosphere and shedding his signature talk/singing which hen
This is a “list” song, with most of its focus being on reminiscing from your current point view as you watch an ex move on with her life.
He uses the verses to sing of all the things that she could do right now: Marry an architect, build a house out on the water, drink wine with her grown up friends in California, straighten out her Mississippi accent in the city, work a corner office job, etc.
However, he cleverly then flips the script in the chorus as he shifts his focus to the carefree moments and good memories from when they were 23 and dating/nearly marrying each other, that they’ll never have with anyone else:
“You’ll always be my first time in New Orleans.”
“We’ll always have Folly beach.”
“We’ll always have delta nights.”
Sam Hunt is always going to be labeled as the ground-breaking artist that brought an entirely new style to the country music platform when he debuted on the scene. But as he continuously proves, he’s also not a one-trick pony.
“23” is another great example of Sam Hunt, the songwriter turned artist, expanding on what he does best and stretching to the edges of his comfort zone, while delivering a very strong song that will no doubt make its intended impact on listeners and should open his next chapter with another Top 10.
