CODY WEBB
"Sticks"
Vere Records
With a songwriting cut on Luke Combs This One’s For You (“Memories Are Made Of”), and his song “Jon Boat” earning a million streams and counting, it’s safe to say that Cody Webb has created a substantial amount of buzz over the past few years and that he continues turning heads with songs such as “Coast of Carolina,” “People Watching,” and his newest release “Sticks.”
With a guitar shred dragging you through the gritty muddiness of the intro, Webb then pulls you into “Sticks” with a lyric that instantly paints a picture of the middle of nowhere place that he calls home, while giving you an open invite to come on out there with him.
He describes it as a place that is way out past your last chance to get gas, that’s not even a dot on a map, and the type of place with pretty homegrown girls where the locals drink homemade shine from a red cup, before inviting you to come and see it for yourself while teasing in the hook, “You could probably get used to this, out here in the sticks.”
However, where Webb shifts this from a good, irresistibly catchy song to one that you’ll want to listen to repeatedly, is when he begins to describe who the people are at their core in these types of small towns and instantly builds a strong connection to anyone who lives in (or was raised in) small town U.S.A:
“We ain’t worried about what we ain’t got.”
“We’re just living off the land, raising what we eat.”
“Blessing everybody’s heart while we’re snapping beans.”
There’s a few well-placed music namechecks to Skynyrd and Hank, and again in the bridge when he cites Hank Jr’s smash hit “Country Boy Can Survive,” and although songs like this have been done a million times over in country music in the past decade, Cody Webb reaches so well into the country lifestyle and pulls it out with such raw honesty, that he makes this idea feel fresh and new again.
It comes as absolutely no surprise that Webb has said the song goes over very well with live crowds, as there is a built-in audience participation moment at the start of the final chorus that immediately has you wanting to see Webb play this song live and be a part of screaming out the lyrics alongside him when he does.
Cody Webb’s buzz is already going strong, and it ain’t about to slow down anytime soon!
