"Can't Do Without Me"
Wheelhouse/Stoney Creek
Since it first hit the airwaves in 2002, American Idol has continually churned out great new artists across every genre, and country music has certainly benefitted from it.
I always like to say, though, that when you’re on a television show watched by millions of people, you can quickly make your mark on the music world with your first single, just as Season 21 winner Chayce Beckham has with “23.” That said, I personally always look to see what an artist follows-up with before determining if it was only a one-time thing or if there really is something there that makes an artist buzzworthy.
Beckham has teamed up with country star Lindsay Ell on his follow-up release, and has delivered something that is absolutely going to make him a buzzworthy artist as he takes a major step forward on his music path with “Can’t Do Without Me.”
The true duet sees Beckham and Ell swapping lines back and forth, which elevates the emotions coming from both points of view as they pull you through the steamy lyric of counting down the minutes with anticipation of a night in together.
“Since I clocked in at 8, I’ve been waiting on 5,” Beckham opens the song with, before Ell responds with “I’ve been dreaming all day, thinking about tonight.” Based only on these opening lyrics, though it isn’t outright said, you could be led to believe that maybe the morning started off with them tangled up in the sheets, and that’s the catalyst that’s leading them to wanting to continue it tonight.
Several lines that perfectly capture their revved-up feelings are spread throughout the song including Beckham singing, “I can’t wait to see that dress spend that night on the floor,” and Ell and Beckham then coming together vocally in the chorus to sing, “It won’t be long until we are burning up them sheets.”
For lack of better terms this is a “hot” song, but it’s also one that does a whole lot of things interestingly right that will help Beckham raise his status.
The conversation in the bridge between the two is a perfect touch that adds a great ending moment to the lyrics as it hits on that 5 o’clock, going home rush of emotions that started way back in the opening lines, thus bringing everything full circle to complete the emotional tug.
The other factor that really makes this stand out comes in the tempo. Most steamy songs lean on a softer, sexy feel, whereas “Can’t Do Without Me” is more up-tempo based and leans into guitar licks throughout the song, giving this a truly unique vibe that sets it apart and onto a level all its own – the level that will earn Chayce Beckham his buzzworthy artist to watch status in 2022.
