ROB MAYES - Still Got My Key - HogCity

As singer-songwriter/actor Rob Mayes has continued releasing new music over this past year, giving stark definition to his most current chapter, he now delivers what might be his most intriguing layer yet with his latest single, “Still Got My Key.”

Co-written by Mayes and Craig Wiseman, the modern country kissed groove sweeps into an addictive backbeat that instantly pulls you in as it masks around an irresistible flavoring of 70’s soul induced R&B, allowing his softer toned vocal to hold the emotional edge of the struggles of moving on when she keeps coming back in and out of the picture.

While in the middle of a buzzed battle that pits his strength to stand alone against his inner weakness of letting her back in again, Mayes laments in the opening verse how he should have taken her key the night that she left and walked out his door. However, as has been par for the consistent course, he quickly finds himself falling right back into overthinking about her again.

Cleverly weaving comparative lyrics that bring together the truths of her not only having his physical house key but also having a firm lock on his heart, he adds hints of frustration to the tilts of his voice to expertly highlight the juxtaposition he’s feeling as he fuels the chorus:

“I thought I closed that door and locked it

I thought you wouldn’t get back in

I thought I moved on and forgotten

How your touch felt on my skin

Guess I’m still on the chain

Just another old flame

You come and rain your gasoline

You come and lead just as you please

And it gets to me that you get to me

You still got my key”

There’s an atmosphere within the very smart usage of the instrumentation that holds a behind closed doors sexiness within the racing emotional tugs that plague him during the heat of the moment, clouded decisions that always send him right back to the broken-hearted tailspin of her leaving again; confessing that his missing her sadness follows him no matter how far he tries to run from it.

Rob Mayes has continually proven his abilities to place his music craftily alongside what’s happening here and now on country radio. But with “Still Got My Key,” there arrives a stark familiarity that holds you while he guides it along the lines of anything but the typical to give him a song that stands out uniquely amongst the pack of overcrowded new releases.
