CHRIS LANE - What Am I Supposed To Tell The Dog - Red Street Records
Chris Lane made his debut to the mainstream country music world ten years ago, slating gold and platinum singles with catchy, sing-along lyrics and modern, pop-infused vibes. In recent years, though, we have come realize and appreciate his talent as a songwriter as he continues to embrace his softer side while speaking to the sentimental side in all of us.
His latest release, his first of 2025, offers a unique perspective on a common theme, one that will have us appreciating the effects of life decisions on everyone in the family. “What Am I Supposed To Tell The Dog” is available now, both digitally and on all streaming platforms, via Red Street Records.
Country music has always been the home for breakup songs. But what has always set this genre apart from others is its unique, new approach of telling an old story. Written by Lane along with Jameson Rodgers, Lydia Vaughan and Seth Mosley, “What Am I Supposed To Tell The Dog” is the story of a breakup and, while he the narrator understands the complications of the ending of a relationship and all of the thoughts, feelings and emotions that go along with the coping aftermath, he has no idea what he’s supposed to tell his four-footed friend, who doesn’t understand what changed and why it happened.
It’s an endearing approach to the breakup theme, one that only country music can tell. Once known as a crooner of upbeat pop-country numbers early in his career, Lane continues to change narrative around his country music resume, further proving his abilities and talents as a songwriter, singer, and artist.
“But what am I supposed to tell the dog?
He waits by the door
Thinks every passing car’s yours all day long
You can break the heart of a man
‘Cause he can understand
But a good boy I don’t know why you’re gone
So what am I supposed to tell the dog?”
The release of “What Am I Supposed To Tell The Dog” follows a pair of top-notch releases from 2024 that finished his year on a high note. The country star is poised for a monumental year, he is currently on the road as special guest on Rascal Flatts’ Life is A Highway Tour.
Slating his first No.1 in 2015 with “Fix”, Lane’s hits catalogue also includes “I Don’t Know About You”, “Take Back Home Girl” featuring Tori Kelly, and “Big, Big Plans”.
Flash forward a few years, and with back-to-back releases including “If I Die Before You” as well as his top 25 country radio single “Find Another Bar”, Lane has once again found his niche in the ever-competitive country music industry.
