With her ultra-powerful “Wise Woman” collaboration with Twin Kennedy and its subsequent live event having recently earned a CCMA nomination, combining with the recent Billboard Canada charting success of her last single “Married,” it’s safe to say that Mallory Johnson is on the verge of becoming Canadian country music’s next must watch artist.

On the heels of all this success, she’s now released her brand-new single “Goin’ Broke.”

The song, co-written by Mallory and Carolyn Dawn Johnson, features an ear catching, underground prohibition feel in that while it’s moody in its groove and fuses in flashes of country elements, it’s instrumentation also swerves into territories that borrow from blues and jazz to give this a sultry, flirty feel that perfectly matches the flavor of the I know I’m guilty lyric.

Pulling from the age old saying of trying to “keep up with the joneses,” Malloy wraps her voice - in an almost a tease like feel - into lyrics that outline the fake millionaire lifestyle she’s living and the true cost of what it takes for her to maintain it.

Accepting it as just part of who she has become, Mallory sings us through the opening lines of the song, “Nothing wrong with trying to boost my confidence, feeling like a million bucks is a good dollar spent,” before she drags us straight down the rabbit hole on the back of amazingly, well-crafted lines that outline they type of person she’s become in her trying to keep up state of mind:

“Put on plastic, pay it later…big time spender, small town saver”

“Just call me the bargain connoisseur, I dress to impress in my pink tarnished ring and my faux fur”

“Champagne taste on a Bud Light budget.”

The chorus admittedly shows that she is 100% well-aware of how much she’s mis-stepping and the many different ways that it’s affecting her life negatively as she sings of having trouble paying her rent, mentions her over drafted bank account, etc.… but the thrill and excitement that comes with fitting in with the in-crowd is too much for her to overcome and turn away from, as she pushes into the memorable hook, “Goin’ broke trying to look rich!”

Though this song has a fun, unique feel to it and is sung in such a playful way that you initially might overlook the depth of the lyric, by the second and third spin of it you’ll be looking at your own budget and making sure you aren’t living above your means.

“Goin’ Broke” doesn’t only give us another memorable song from Mallory Johnson, but it adds another bullet point to her budding resume as she moves up another rung on the ladder toward that buzzed about, artist to watch tag.
