“Red Light,” “Let It Rain,” and “Whatever She’s Got,” are just a few of the smashes that have made David Nail a household name with the country music faithful. However, in more recent years, David has delivered some of his most personal, most solid work as a songwriter and artist as he’s completely challenged himself to stretch outside of his normal comfort zone to elevate all his unique signatures in such innovative ways that he’s redefined himself for this next chapter of his career, while still expertly holding onto the attributes that got him here.

Back in June, he took us straight into the heart of summer romance with “Sunset Carousel” and gave us our first look at the new music he had been working on; potentially teasing a bigger project that could be in the works.

He now returns with his brand-new song, “Wherever You Are Tonight,” and he continues unraveling the story of the summer romance from “Sunset Carousel” but tells it from the looking perspective after the fling’s ended and they’ve gone their separate ways.

Co-written by David with Robyn Collins and Grant Vogel, the song leans on a modern kissed, mid-tempo melody to allow the perfect amount of room for David to use his distinctive vocals as only he can to grab the heart of emotions wrapped into each line of the lyric, which range from happily smiling when he’s thinking back to what they had to pondering missing you thoughts of whether she was the one that got away.

He perfectly paints pictures with well-crafted lines that allow the listener to vividly see what he’s singing about, endearingly focused on descriptions of her personality rather than going the easy route with her exterior looks:

“You used to like smoking cigarettes when you drank.”

“Cover bands playing way too loud, you’d be dancing in the middle of the crowd”

Then, as he did on the incredible “St. Louis,” he pulls you straight into the most important moments from their not-so-distant past, which have now become his best memories as he’s lamenting on missing her and wondering where she is and what she’s doing tonight while remembering seeing her for the first time in Seattle in the pouring rain and wondering if she still thinks about that day, too.

This drips with nostalgia as Nail masterfully pulls the listener through his lyrical story in such a smart way that he brings something out from way back in you own memory bank and brings a smile to your face as you begin to think about your own one that got away.

David Nail has always had one of the best voices of the modern country era, but by removing any restraints and really focusing on just writing great songs, he’s been able to open his next chapter in such a strong way that the buzz around town on him and the things still to come has become as deafening as when he first arrived with “Red Light.”
