While there’s no clear-cut blueprint for a songwriter/artist to follow when it comes to making a major splash in Nashville’s music community, when Garth Brooks takes interest, champions you, and brings you under his wing, that’s a surefire blessing that puts you on the fast track; of course, your talent level also needs to match that type of endorsement.

That’s exactly where Mitch Rossell has found himself over the past decade, which has landed him coveted spots on Garth’s 2016 world tour and his 2022 stadium tour, as well as songwriting accolades on the icons highly touted singles  “Ask Me How I Know,” “That’s What Cowboys Do,” ”All Day Long,” and "Dive Bar.”

Rossell has been making headway as an artist as well, making his Grand Ole Opry debut this past weekend, which not only saw his famous mentor surprise him by showing up to introduce him to the famed circle, but also saw Mitch earn a standing ovation for his newest single “Son.”

The ultra-personal song is a true embodiment of the classic country style of storytelling and the very definition of what makes country music so endearing to its listeners.

Telling his mom and dad’s whirlwind lust to love story, he paces us through the opening verses where he transparently reveals that his mom and dad didn’t stay together after he was born as he speaks of only being able to see his dad on every other weekend while outlining the specific bonding moments that they’d share such as fishing, watching the Braves baseball games, etc.

The power of the chorus certainly hits strong when he sings the words his dad would tell him during those bonding moments:

“Son, I hope you know how much I love you

And when you’re not with me I’m always thinking of you

You’re the drive inside my heart, the reason I reach for the stars above

He said my world revolves around you

That’s why I call you son.”

However, it’s when Rossell brings us straight into the life-altering moments during the songs final push that we feel the heaviest tugs on our hearts. He weaves us into the bridge and the final verse by telling of two very different situations that shaped his life; Losing his dad to a car accident with a drunk driver, and then rediscovering the faith that it caused him to lose when his own son was born, and he found himself reciting the very words that his dad would tell him years prior.

Whenever a songwriter can bring together the right words on the toughest moments of life that they’ve personally experienced, it always adds a different flavor to the emotional pull of their voice, instrumentation structure, and overall delivery of their story. Mitch Rossell has absolutely struck that mark with “Son” as he continues to forge ahead on his artist path while putting all the attributes that make him such a renowned songwriter on full display.
