Justin Champagne has surged in the country-rap category, making a name for himself behind a high-profile collaboration with Snoop Dogg on “If She Ain’t Country” and through viral sensations such as “When I Pull Up” and “Ridin’ High.”

However, underneath that outer layer, Champagne has also slid in some heart tuggers that have showcased a completely other side of his arsenal as he’s taken us through heartbreaking emotions on softer toned songs such as “Refill” and “Bottom of the Bottle.”

He continues revealing that heart tugging aspect on his latest single “I Lost Everything.”

The prominent piano laced instrumentation brings a solemn tone to the lyrics, but it’s Champagne’s gravelly vocals that add the strong injection of hurt and confusion that naturally arrives when you’re trying to move on but are feeling stuck in place.

He confesses straight away that her goodbye was like kerosene as she lit a match and walked away while he burned; a feeling that he holds onto throughout the song as it progresses into the second verse with darker tilted lyrics about how her lies were like his slow death and twisted him in such a way that she made the loss of her feel like suicide, essentially pointing the blame at him and telling that their split is because of his own doing.

But this song really takes shape when Champagne does what so many of us do in these situations, in that he somewhat tortures himself by holding on to the past as he literally watches her moving on, admitting “don’t know how, bout you’re moving on” while later asking “how the hell you moving on?” before painfully singing out:

“I never knew what love felt like ‘til you loved me

Never hated anything ‘til you left me

Didn’t know perfume on a pillow could last this long….

Cause I lost everything when I lost you.”

What I personally love about this song is that there’s no timeline set in stone that tells us how long after the breakup he’s still struggling, which perfectly leaves it open to interpretation for anyone who has just experienced a breakup themselves or for those who have been months removed and are still struggling to move on.

This connectibility factor smashes skillfully into his emotionally charged vocal to enhance the song’s embrace on the broken hearted and provide the “you’re not alone in this” warm hug that so many need when struggling through heartbreak.
